COMPOSTABLE PRODUCTS

Custom Kraft Paper & Bamboo Bags

We love our compostable bags, and although these don’t pack down as small as our compostable resin bags, our kraft paper and bamboo checkout bags are another great compostable choice. They are strong, and can be made to best fit your needs, including being made with an optional compostable moisture-resistant coating!

They are fully customizable with 4 colour printing. Tell us the size, style, and quantity you would like over the year and we can quote you exactly what you want. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for paper bags is around 10,000-20,000 pieces.

Don’t be confused by other paper bags. Just because it is paper doesn’t mean it can be composted. In order for a paper bag to be safe for compost, it must not have any coatings or varnishes that will contaminate the compost. As compostable products are the ONLY thing we do, rest assured that we are not adding anything that will cause any harm to the compost.

Our compostable labels are the perfect compliment to our compostable paper bags as they help keep bags closed and prevent tampering when you need what’s inside to stay inside.

Refresh Packaging's compostable paper and bamboo bag styles good for Retail, food service, checkout, and delivery. Styles include loop and die-cut handles

Our paper bags are safe for all composting facilities and programs in Canada, the United States and Europe. Our paper bags are an excellent choice given the single-use plastic bag ban that the Federal Government of Canada has announced. With bamboo as our preferred paper source, our bags are the most proven eco-friendly solution next to a certified compostable resin bags – with the research and testing taking place throughout the world. We manufacture all styles from flat top to beautiful handled bags.

Colours:

These bags come in natural colours or white with the ability to print on both styles, and both options allow your printing to stand out nicely and supports any brand. We can even do some creative printing on the gusset of the bag so your branding is as clever as you want it to be.

Ink colours are not restricted but there is a maximum of 4 colours that can be printed on the bags.

Strength:

The size and thickness of the bag you want to be produced will determine how much weight they can hold, but standard-sized bags typically have no problems holding around 12 lbs and up. We can build your bag to meet your size and weight requirements so you feel confident that your paper bags will hold up in cases where others may have failed.

Safe and Certified Compostable:

So what does it mean exactly to be certified compostable? It means our bags have been tested by the BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) which is an external organization that verifies that our products meet their requirements and are true to what we say.  This is the regulatory body that completes rigorous testing on our products and others to ensure they are safe to be used in composting and will not add any harmful chemicals to the natural process.

Not all paper products are equal and just because it is paper does not mean it is safe for compost. You must be very careful not to put paper that has non-compostable coatings, lamination or varnishes in the compost as it will contaminate the compost.

Moisture-Resistant:

It’s true, we can build a paper bag for you that is moisture-resistant so it holds up better in different climates as well as with different products placed inside. There is nothing more frustrating than when you put something in a paper bag that has moisture or condensation on the outside or could possible leak and it causes the bag to fall apart. Our moisture barriers are certified compostable and will not cause any issues, or add toxins to the compost you want to put the bags into. This option is perfect for businesses doing food delivery.

Our paper products are also PFAS free. This again means that there are no harmful toxins for you or for your compost.

We currently do not carry stock paper bags. But if you tell us the bags you are most interested in, we will work to carry the sizes that matter most to you as our customers.

If you are a Grocer or Retailer that would like to order a branded bag for your customers, we can help. We can create the size you want with the branding you need. We can print up to 4 colours and produce high volume numbers depending on your consumption.

There is a minimum order of between 10,000 and 20,000 bags, depending on if you choose to go with bamboo or kraft paper. Just let us know what you want and we will take care of all the details for you. Unlike our compostable resin bags, these products do not expire.

No need to compromise on quality and no need to spend more money on expensive paper or multi-use options.

We will even help support you with our creative team and help you promote your product with our marketing expertise. We want these products to be an asset to your business and help build customer loyalty as well as create a better world for everyone.

Tell Us What We Can Build for You.

When ordering custom bags, the first order takes the longest as we need to build the plates and get everything set up for you. Delivery is usually within 13-16 weeks. We are flexible on where they need to go and will do what we can to help you get them there.

If you currently work with a distribution company, we will do what we can to build a relationship with them and keep your supply chain as simple and smooth as possible.

Our compostable paper bags can be made from kraft paper, but we are most proud of our bamboo paper bags. Bamboo regenerates extremely fast, making it an incredibly renewable resource. And since they are made from organic material themselves, they respond the same way organic material responds in the decomposition process.

Just like your typical organic waste, decomposition is taken care of by bacteria that break the bags down and essentially eat them for their own food source. What is left behind is waste the bacteria expels, which is often the nutrients that can not be consumed by the bacteria. This nutrient-rich by-product is what has been used as a healthy soil additive for ages.

In fact, there is evidence that composting practices were used over 10,000 years ago in different parts of the world. There is even evidence of composting methods being used by King Sargon during the Akkadian Dynasty, which lasted about 160 years between 2320 BC and 2120 BC. So composting is not a new concept. We are just getting smart and going back to some effective proven natural methods of enhancing our soil nutrients and dealing with waste.

Because our products are made from organic material, bioplastics, and paper, they too break down just like organic waste does when exposed to the same conditions. Bacteria are key to the fast breakdown of any organic material and are essential for our products as well. When placed in a composting facility or combined with home composting, our bags typically break down within 8-16 weeks depending on how much bacteria is present, as well as moisture and temperature conditions. The decomposition of our products can even happen between 6-10 weeks when the conditions are ideal and there are other organic materials present with the products.

Paper is considered a “brown” ingredient for compost and is essential for the balance of the compost. Brown ingredients help reduce smells and keep the bacteria happy by providing a different food source and increasing the biodiversity of the compost.

The number 1 thing to remember is that, when the bags do break down, they leave nothing harmful behind. No microplastics are leached into the environment like other bags that claim to be eco-friendly such as “biodegradable” and “oxo-degradable” bags. That is why certified compostable products are revolutionary in our fight against harmful plastics while allowing us to still have the convenience we have come to enjoy in our everyday life.
