Compostable Produce Bag Products for Your Fresh Goods

Produce Bags

Produce bags used for fruits, veggies and often meat products are one of the most common types of single-use plastic bags we use today. Canadian’s use even more of them than a T-shirt or traditional grocery bags when they go to the grocery store.

Now there is a product that you can offer your customers to use that won’t hurt the environment. And even better yet, when they forget to eat that lovely head of lettuce they purchased last week, they can just toss the whole thing, bag and all (as long as there is no other packaging on the lettuce) right into your compost bin. The bag will breakdown just like the lettuce and no one has to deal with the nasty mess currently growing in fridges Canada wide.

It’s an affordable healthy alternative that will keep your customers smiling and keep veggies growing!

Our produce bags for your fruit, vegetable and meat products are BPI certified and are safe for all composting facilities and programs in Canada, the United States and Europe. Our bags are accepted even in Montreal where the first single-use plastic bag ban has been successfully put into the place. These bags are a proven eco-friendly solution by the research and testing taking place throughout the world.

They come in 2 resin colours, first being a neutral light-beige that allows all your printing to stand out nicely and supports any brand. The second colour is a light green making it clear they are compostable. But the thinner the type of bag the more translucent they become. So if you would like your produce bags to be more opaque that is an option as well.

Our soy-based ink colours are not restricted but there is a maximum of 4 colours that can be printed on the bags.

Shelf Life:

These bags have a 12-month shelf life. This is an important validator to their ability to breakdown. They are not meant to last forever. So we work closely with you to ensure you have the right number of bags you need when you need them at their best quality.

Produce bags are not known to be very strong, to begin with. Our bags are more reliable than most traditional bag options since they come from a different source material giving them more elasticity.  Depending on the size and thickness of the bag you want to be produced will determine how much weight they can hold, but standard-sized bags typically have no problems holding between 5-7lbs.

Certified Compostable:

So what does it mean exactly to be certified compostable? It means our bags have been tested by the BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) which is an external organization that verifies how our products meet their requirements and are true to what we say.  This is the regulatory body that completes rigorous testing on our products and others to ensure they are safe to be used in composting and will not add any harmful chemicals to the natural process.

Not all products are equal and without the BPI certification products are not verified to be safe for compost facilities, your backyard compost. Just because they claim to be biodegradable doesn’t mean they won’t contaminate soil, water or other environments with harmful micro-plastics.

Our products are certified to compost but contents you place in the bag may not be compostable. You must verify what is allowed within your local regulations.

Our stock bags come in the translucent bag colour mentioned in the product overview. They all carry an educational component to help support composting efforts regardless of where they are used and to also make it very clear these bags are safe to compost.

Just like your typical organic waste, decomposition is taken care of by bacteria that break it down and essentially eat it for their own food source. What is left behind is waste the bacteria expels which is often the nutrients that can not be consumed by the bacteria. This nutrient-rich by-product is what has been used as healthy soil additives for ages.

In fact, there is evidence composting practices were used over 10,000 years ago in different parts of the world. There’s even evidence of composting methods being used by King Sargon during the Akkadian Dynasty, which lasted about 160 years between 2320 BC and 2120 BC. So composting is not a new concept. We are just getting smart and going back to some effective proven natural methods of enhancing our soil nutrients and dealing with waste.

Because our products are made from organic material or bioplastics, they too breakdown just like organic waste does when exposed to the same conditions. Bacteria is key to the fast breakdown of any organic material and are essential for our products as well. But when placed in a composting facility or combined with home composting, they typically break down within 8-16 weeks depending on how much bacteria is present, moisture and temperature. The decomposition of our products can even happen between 6-10 weeks when the conditions are ideal and there are other organic materials present with the products.

But the number 1 thing to remember is when they do breakdown, they leave nothing harmful behind. No micro-plastics are leached into the environment like other bags that claim to be eco-friendly such as biodegradable and oxo-degradable bags. That is why compostable products are revolutionary in our fight against harmful plastics but yet allow us to still have the convenience we have come to enjoy in our everyday life.
